Product Safety & Installation Disclaimer
The gear we sell is built to get loud and live hard — on the water, on the trail, and everywhere the pavement ends. That performance comes from real electrical power, real current, and real heat, and it demands a real installation. A system that's wired right will outlast your ride; a system that's wired wrong can cook an amplifier, kill a set of speakers, drain a battery, or start a fire. Please read this before you connect anything. It protects your ride, your passengers, and you.
This disclaimer is part of, and is incorporated into, our Terms of Service, and it works alongside our Warranty and Refund policies. In it, "we," "us," and "our" mean Northern Audio Supply LLC d/b/a Wavelength USA. It is written to be thorough because this equipment deserves respect — none of it is meant to scare you off a great build, and most of it is exactly what a good professional installer already does by habit.
SECTION 1 — THESE ARE HIGH-POWER ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS
1.1 Amplifiers, subwoofers, speakers, wiring, distribution blocks, capacitors, and related audio components move significant electrical current and generate heat under normal use. A modern amplifier can pull tens or even hundreds of amps of current from your electrical system at full output — far more than most factory accessory circuits are built to carry.
1.2 Installed incorrectly, these products can short-circuit, overheat, melt insulation, discharge or damage batteries, back-feed your electrical system, and — in a worst case — cause an electrical fire or damage to your vehicle, vessel, or its wiring, charging system, or electronics.
1.3 Treat every installation as electrical work, because it is. The single most common thread in the problems we see is not a defective product — it is a power, ground, fuse, gain, or impedance mistake made during install.
1.4 If you are not confident performing automotive, marine, or powersports 12-volt (or 24-volt) electrical work to a professional standard, stop and use a qualified installer. Sections 4 through 9 below explain the specific practices that matter most.
SECTION 2 — PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
2.1 WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL INSTALLER PERFORM YOUR INSTALLATION. A professional will size your wiring and fusing to your actual power draw, protect your runs, match impedance to your amplifier, set gains correctly, and confirm your charging system can support the load.
2.2 A proper installation includes, at minimum: correct power and ground wire gauge for the current and the length of the run; correct fusing at the battery and at each amplifier; clean, tight, corrosion-free grounds to bare metal; correct speaker and subwoofer impedance for the amplifier; properly set gains and crossovers; adequate ventilation and heat dissipation for amplifiers; secure, vibration-resistant mounting; protected wire routing; and full compliance with each product manufacturer's installation instructions and rated specifications.
2.3 YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROPER INSTALLATION. IF YOU CHOOSE TO SELF-INSTALL, YOU DO SO ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK, AND YOU ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE OR INJURY THAT RESULTS FROM INSTALLATION THAT DOES NOT MEET THE MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS AND ACCEPTED PRACTICE.
2.4 Manufacturer instructions control. Where anything in this disclaimer differs from the specific instructions or rated specifications supplied with your product, follow the manufacturer's instructions and ratings for that product.
SECTION 3 — BATTERY, CHARGING SYSTEM, AND ELECTRICAL LOAD
3.1 Know your load. A high-power system can demand more current than a stock alternator and battery were designed to deliver, especially at sustained high volume. Before you buy or install, add up the current your amplifiers can draw and compare it honestly to your charging system's capacity.
3.2 Signs your electrical system is undersized include headlights or dash lights dimming on bass hits, voltage sagging well below normal under load, a hot or overworked alternator, and a battery that will not hold charge. These are warnings, not quirks — running a system that starves your electrical system can damage the amplifier, the battery, and the alternator.
3.3 Common upgrades to support a bigger system include a higher-output alternator, an additional or upgraded battery, and heavier-gauge charging and ground wiring (commonly called a "big three" upgrade). A capacitor is not a substitute for adequate charging capacity.
3.4 Battery safety. Batteries store large amounts of energy and, in the case of lead-acid types, can vent flammable and corrosive gases. Never bridge battery terminals with a tool or an unfused wire. When working on the system, disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last. Follow the battery manufacturer's handling, charging, mounting, and ventilation instructions, and observe any special requirements for lithium (LiFePO4) batteries.
3.5 YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CONFIRMING THAT YOUR VEHICLE OR VESSEL'S ELECTRICAL AND CHARGING SYSTEM CAN SAFELY SUPPORT THE PRODUCTS YOU INSTALL. Damage caused by an overloaded or inadequate electrical system is not our responsibility and is generally excluded from manufacturer warranty coverage.
SECTION 4 — FUSING AND CIRCUIT PROTECTION
4.1 Fuse at the source. The main power wire running from the battery must be protected by a fuse or circuit breaker located as close to the battery's positive terminal as practical — typically within a short distance of the terminal (marine and automotive standards commonly cite a range on the order of a few inches to well under two feet, depending on the standard and whether the wire is sheathed). The purpose is simple: if that wire ever chafes through and shorts to chassis, the fuse blows before the wire becomes a heating element.
4.2 Fuse each amplifier. Each amplifier should be protected at its rated fuse value, in addition to the main-line fuse. Distribution blocks with fused outputs are a clean way to protect multiple amplifiers from a single main run.
4.3 Right fuse, right rating. Use the fuse type and rating the manufacturer specifies (for example ANL, mini-ANL / AFC, MAXI, or an appropriately rated circuit breaker). NEVER replace a fuse with a higher-rated fuse, a bridge, or any substitute to "stop it blowing." A blown fuse is telling you something is wrong — find the cause.
4.4 Match the fuse to the wire. Fuse ratings must protect the wire, not just the amplifier. An oversized fuse on an undersized wire defeats the entire point of the fuse.
SECTION 5 — WIRING, ROUTING, AND GROUNDS
5.1 Size the wire to the job. Power and ground wire must be gauged for both the current draw and the length of the run; longer runs and higher current require thicker wire. Undersized wire runs hot, drops voltage, and is a fire risk. Use quality wire of the correct gauge; be aware that some wire is not true-gauge, and follow the manufacturer's recommended gauge for your amplifier and run length.
5.2 Grounds matter as much as power. Ground to clean, bare metal that is solidly connected to the chassis or the manufacturer-designated ground point, using a short run and a tight, corrosion-free connection. A poor ground causes noise, poor performance, overheating, and amplifier faults.
5.3 Route away from hazards. Keep wiring away from fuel lines, brake lines, steering and suspension components, hot exhaust, and moving parts. Never route power wire where chafe, heat, or pinching can reach it.
5.4 Protect every pass-through. Use a rubber grommet or proper bulkhead fitting wherever a wire passes through metal — the firewall, a bulkhead, a cage tube, or any panel. A bare wire against a bare metal edge will eventually cut through and short. Add supplemental abrasion protection (loom, sleeving, or split conduit) anywhere a run could rub or vibrate against an edge.
5.5 Secure and strain-relieve. Support and secure wiring at regular intervals so it cannot sag into moving parts, and provide strain relief at connectors so vibration does not work them loose or fracture the conductor over time.
SECTION 6 — IMPEDANCE, VOICE-COIL WIRING, AND AMPLIFIER LOADING
6.1 Respect the amplifier's minimum impedance. Every amplifier is rated to a minimum load (for example, "1-ohm stable"). Wiring your speakers or subwoofers to a total impedance BELOW the amplifier's rated minimum forces it to deliver more current than it was built to handle, which drives it into overheating, protect mode, or permanent failure. When in doubt, wire to a safe, rated load.
6.2 Dual voice coil (DVC) wiring is easy to get wrong. DVC subwoofers can be wired in series or parallel, and the choice changes the final impedance the amplifier sees. A series/parallel mistake across multiple subs is one of the most common ways a healthy amplifier gets destroyed on day one. Plan the full wiring — every sub, every coil — before you connect anything, and confirm the net impedance is within the amplifier's rating.
6.3 Bridging and multi-channel loads. If you bridge channels, the amplifier's minimum stable impedance in bridged mode is usually higher than in stereo — follow the amplifier's chart. Do not assume; verify against the manufacturer's spec for your exact wiring.
6.4 DAMAGE FROM OPERATING AN AMPLIFIER BELOW ITS RATED MINIMUM IMPEDANCE, OR FROM INCORRECT VOICE-COIL WIRING, IS MISUSE. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND IS GENERALLY EXCLUDED FROM MANUFACTURER WARRANTY COVERAGE.
SECTION 7 — GAIN, CLIPPING, AND DISTORTION (THE NUMBER ONE SPEAKER KILLER)
7.1 Distortion, not power, kills most speakers. The most common way speakers and subwoofers die is not "too many watts" — it is clipping. When an amplifier is pushed past its clean output (often by an over-turned gain or by trying to make a small amplifier play too loud), the waveform "clips," delivering distorted, heat-heavy energy that cooks voice coils quickly, even on speakers rated for more power than the amplifier makes.
7.2 Set gains correctly. The gain is a sensitivity match between source and amplifier, not a volume knob. Set it properly — by a trained ear or, better, with test tones and a meter or oscilloscope — so the system plays cleanly at high volume. If you hear distortion, turn it down; distortion is the warning that damage is happening.
7.3 Match power sensibly. Underpowering a speaker and then cranking a distorted signal is more dangerous to it than clean power near its rating. Pair components thoughtfully and keep the signal clean at all listening levels.
7.4 DAMAGE CAUSED BY CLIPPING, DISTORTION, IMPROPER GAIN SETTING, OR IMPROPER TUNING IS MISUSE. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AND IS GENERALLY EXCLUDED FROM MANUFACTURER WARRANTY COVERAGE.
SECTION 8 — HEAT, VENTILATION, AND ENCLOSURES
8.1 Amplifiers need to breathe. Amplifiers shed heat and require airflow around their heatsinks. Do not mount an amplifier in a sealed, unventilated space, upside down in a way that traps heat, buried under carpet or panels, or stacked tight against other heat sources. An amplifier that keeps dropping into protect mode is usually telling you it is starved for airflow or overloaded.
8.2 Build enclosures to spec. Subwoofers are engineered for specific enclosure types and volumes. Use the enclosure type (sealed, ported, bandpass), internal air volume, and port dimensions the subwoofer manufacturer specifies. The wrong enclosure can cause mechanical over-excursion and failure even at moderate power, and a badly built or leaking box will underperform and can damage the driver.
8.3 Mount for cooling and access. Give amplifiers room, keep them out of direct water and sustained high heat, and mount them where connections and fuses remain accessible.
SECTION 9 — MARINE INSTALLATIONS
9.1 A boat is a harsh electrical environment. Water, salt, humidity, vibration, and pooled bilge water attack connections and components constantly. Marine installations demand marine-appropriate methods, not carried-over car-audio shortcuts.
9.2 Use marine-appropriate materials. Where the environment is exposed, use tinned marine-grade wire, corrosion-resistant and sealed connections, dielectric grease where appropriate, and components rated for marine use. Keep connections and non-waterproof components up out of the bilge and above any water line, and provide drainage and drip loops so water runs away from connections rather than into them.
9.3 Follow recognized marine practice. Marine DC electrical systems should be installed consistent with recognized marine standards (for example, the kind of practices reflected in American Boat & Yacht Council guidance) covering wiring, over-current protection, connections, and mounting. Pay attention to bonding and galvanic corrosion, and to keeping the audio system's grounds and connections correct within the vessel's system. If you are not certain your work meets marine standards, use a qualified marine installer.
9.4 Protect your ability to get home. On boats with a single battery, a loud system can flatten the battery you need to start the engine or run navigation and safety equipment. Consider a dedicated audio/house battery with proper isolation from the starting battery, so entertainment can never strand you.
9.5 Ratings are limits, not guarantees. See Section 12 — a product's IP or "marine" rating describes tested resistance under defined conditions and is not a promise the product cannot be damaged by water, submersion, or corrosion.
SECTION 10 — POWERSPORTS AND OFF-ROAD INSTALLATIONS
10.1 Vibration is the enemy. UTVs, side-by-sides, ATVs, Jeeps, and motorcycles subject everything to constant, severe vibration. Use thread-locking compound where appropriate, secure and strain-relieve every connector, back up friction fits with mechanical fasteners, and re-check fasteners and connections periodically. A connection that is merely "snug" will shake loose over a season of trail use.
10.2 Dust and water ingress. Off-road environments push fine dust and water into everything. Mount and orient components per their ratings, seal what should be sealed, and do not assume an enclosure keeps dust or water out beyond its rating.
10.3 Roll cages and structural mounting. DO NOT DRILL, CUT, WELD, OR OTHERWISE MODIFY A ROLL CAGE, ROPS, FRAME, OR OTHER STRUCTURAL OR SAFETY COMPONENT TO MOUNT AUDIO EQUIPMENT. Structural members protect occupants; compromising them to hang a speaker or amplifier can cause serious injury in a rollover or crash. Use clamp-style mounts rated for the load, and make sure heavy components (tower speakers, sound bars, subwoofer enclosures, amplifiers) are secured so they cannot break free, shift, or become projectiles under hard use or in a crash.
10.4 Small charging systems. Many powersports machines have small stators/charging systems with limited spare output. Adding a high-draw audio system can outrun the machine's ability to keep the battery charged, especially at low RPM or idle. Confirm your machine's charging capacity supports the load, and see Section 3.
SECTION 11 — HEARING SAFETY
11.1 These systems can reach extreme sound-pressure levels. PROLONGED OR REPEATED EXPOSURE TO HIGH-VOLUME AUDIO CAN CAUSE PERMANENT, IRREVERSIBLE HEARING LOSS AND TINNITUS. The louder the level, the shorter the exposure it takes to cause harm.
11.2 Protect yourself and your passengers. Set levels responsibly, take breaks from high volume, and remember that the people nearest the speakers — including children, whose hearing is more vulnerable — take the most exposure. Hearing damage accumulates and does not heal.
SECTION 12 — WATER, DUST, AND INGRESS-PROTECTION RATINGS
12.1 What a rating means. An ingress-protection (IP) rating, or a "marine"/"weatherproof" designation, describes how a product performed against water and solid particles under specific, defined test conditions. It is a controlled benchmark, not a guarantee of real-world survival.
12.2 What a rating does not mean. A rating is NOT a promise that a product is immune to water intrusion, submersion beyond its tested level, pressure washing, salt corrosion over time, or damage from installation that did not follow the manufacturer's instructions. Do not exceed a product's rated conditions, and do not treat any product as more water-, dust-, or corrosion-resistant than its published rating states.
12.3 Installation affects protection. A rated product installed incorrectly — wrong orientation, unsealed passages, drainage blocked, gaskets pinched or omitted — can lose the protection its rating describes. Follow the mounting and sealing instructions exactly.
SECTION 13 — SAFE AND LAWFUL OPERATION
13.1 Do not let audio distract you. Do not adjust controls in a way that takes your attention from operating a vehicle or vessel. Set the system up so routine adjustments are minimal while you are moving.
13.2 Stay aware of your surroundings. KEEP THE VOLUME AT A LEVEL THAT LETS YOU HEAR HORNS, SIRENS, TRAINS, ALARMS, EMERGENCY VEHICLES, AND YOUR SURROUNDINGS. On the water and off-road, being able to hear other craft, machines, and warnings is a safety necessity, not a preference.
13.3 Comply with the law. You are responsible for complying with all laws and regulations that apply to your use of these products — including local noise ordinances, motor-vehicle equipment and sound rules, watercraft and Coast Guard requirements, and off-highway-vehicle regulations where you ride. Requirements vary by state and locality; compliance is your responsibility, not ours.
SECTION 14 — PASSENGER, CHILD, AND OCCUPANT SAFETY
14.1 Secure heavy components. Amplifiers, subwoofer enclosures, tower speakers, and sound bars are heavy. Mount them so they cannot come loose, shift, or become projectiles during hard riding, a sudden stop, a rollover, or a collision. Unsecured equipment is a danger to everyone aboard.
14.2 Mind the youngest ears. Children are more vulnerable to hearing damage than adults; keep levels safe for the passengers closest to the speakers.
14.3 Do not block safety equipment. Do not mount equipment or route wiring where it obstructs controls, restraints, airbags, egress, safety labels, navigation or emergency equipment, or the operator's view.
SECTION 15 — MISUSE, MODIFICATION, AND OUT-OF-SPEC OPERATION
15.1 Damage and hazards caused by improper installation or misuse are not our responsibility and are generally excluded from manufacturer warranty coverage. Without limiting the rest of this disclaimer, misuse includes: overpowering speakers or subwoofers; running an amplifier below its rated minimum impedance; incorrect voice-coil wiring; clipping, distortion, or improper gain/tuning; exceeding any published rating; inadequate fusing or wiring; operating on an inadequate or overloaded electrical system; using a product outside its intended application (for example, using a component not rated for marine use in a marine environment); and blocked ventilation or improper enclosure design.
15.2 No modification. Modifying, altering, opening, or having a product repaired by anyone other than the manufacturer or its authorized service voids warranty coverage and transfers all resulting risk to you. We are not responsible for products that have been modified or repaired outside authorized service.
15.3 Secondhand and unauthorized-source products. This disclaimer, our warranty facilitation, and manufacturer warranty coverage apply to products purchased new from us as an authorized dealer. Products bought secondhand, from unauthorized sellers, or resold to another person are generally outside manufacturer warranty coverage and outside our responsibility. See our Warranty policy.
SECTION 16 — INSTALLED PRODUCTS ARE NOT RETURNABLE
16.1 Once a product has been installed — including partial installation or a test fit that marks, wires, cuts, or alters the product — it cannot be returned. This is because installation can mask or cause damage that we cannot resell around, and because installation is where most product problems actually originate. Confirm fitment and your plan before you install.
16.2 This ties directly to our Refund Policy, which governs returns and store credit. If you are unsure whether an item fits your make, model, year, and build, email us at team@wavelengthusa.com before you order or install, and we will confirm fitment — it takes us a minute and saves you a return you cannot make.
SECTION 17 — DISCLAIMER AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK
17.1 TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE PRODUCTS ARE PROVIDED WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY FROM US OTHER THAN AS EXPRESSLY STATED IN OUR WARRANTY POLICY. YOU ASSUME ALL RISK ARISING FROM THE INSTALLATION, USE, MISUSE, OR INABILITY TO USE THE PRODUCTS.
17.2 TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, NORTHERN AUDIO SUPPLY LLC D/B/A WAVELENGTH USA IS NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INJURY, DEATH, PROPERTY DAMAGE, DAMAGE TO ANY VEHICLE OR VESSEL OR ITS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, FIRE, LOSS OF USE, OR ANY DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE PRODUCTS OR THEIR INSTALLATION, USE, OR MISUSE, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
17.3 THIS SECTION IS SUBJECT TO, AND DOES NOT ENLARGE OUR LIABILITY BEYOND, THE LIMITATION-OF-LIABILITY AND INDEMNIFICATION TERMS OF OUR TERMS OF SERVICE, WHICH ARE INCORPORATED HERE BY REFERENCE.
17.4 Nothing in this disclaimer limits any liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law, affects any rights the manufacturer's warranty gives you, or affects any non-waivable consumer rights you may have under the law of your state.
SECTION 18 — NOT INSTALLATION, ELECTRICAL, OR SAFETY ADVICE
18.1 Information on our site and in this disclaimer is general and is not professional installation, electrical, marine, or safety advice for your specific ride and build. Product specifications, fitment notes, and general guidance are provided to help you plan — they do not replace the manufacturer's instructions or the judgment of a qualified professional.
18.2 When in doubt, ask us about fitment before you buy, follow the manufacturer's instructions, and have a qualified professional handle the install.
SECTION 19 — SEVERABILITY
19.1 If any provision of this disclaimer is found unlawful, void, or unenforceable, that provision is severable and does not affect the validity or enforceability of the remaining provisions, which continue in full force. Any provision that cannot be enforced as written will be enforced to the maximum extent permitted by law.
SECTION 20 — GOVERNING LAW AND CONTACT
20.1 This disclaimer is governed by the laws of the State of West Virginia and the United States, consistent with our Terms of Service.
